Report from Hampshire Multi-Events
Basingstoke & Mid Hants Athletics Club took part in the Hampshire Multi-Events Championship in Portsmouth on Bank Holiday Monday. Competing across a variety of track and field events, the athletes also had to contend with the heat, making personal best performances hard to come by.
Caius Joseph was the top scorer on the day taking the gold medal in the U20 men competition with 2996 points from his 5 events: Long Jump, Javelin, 200m, Discus and 1500m. Malachi Gair also medalled for the U20 men, coming 3rd with a personal best in the Discus. Ryan Bonifas, competing as a guest in the senior mens competition scored well with 2616 points. John Dickinson won the gold for the senior men with Joshua Strudwick in 2nd place.
Our ladies also competed well in their five events: Long jump, High Jump, Hurdles, Shot and 800m. There was a gold for Linda van der Wel for the senior women, gold for Emily Cornwall in the U20 competition and silver for Hannah Reed. For our U15 girls, Iona Irvine finished just outside the medals in 4th place with Ellen Townsend in 5th. Lauren Sawyers finished in 6th place from a field of 17 athletes in the U13 girls competition, achieving a personal best in the High Jump clearing 1.29m.
Also competing on the day were Poppy and Thea Gair, who, along with their brother Malachi, won the family trophy for the 2nd year running.
U11 Millie Coleman was our only competitor in the Quad Kid Championship. Millie competed in four events: 75m, 600m, Long Jump and Howler throw. Millie came 3rd in the 75m and 2nd in the 600m with a time of 2.00.6, knocking 6 seconds off her personal best time. Her total points accumulated across the four events was 192, placing Millie in a creditable 5th place from a strong field of 14 athletes.
