Training

Training takes place each Tuesday and Thursday with sessions at 10am and 6:30pm on both days at Down Grange Sports Ground.
There are frequently Saturday morning track sessions at 9am, subject to cross country & track fixtures.
Meeting for training is usually at Down Grange, between the main car park and the track, however with some sessions away from the complex, it’s usually best to check first using the google calendar (below).

All sessions are supervised by our team of coaches and are for runners of all standards, not just the elite!
Experienced Club members will ensure that newcomers are warmly welcomed.

Club Coaches: Andy Cullen, Don Powell, Ray Gartland, Terry Wegg, Andy Goddard, Tim Fowler, Jenny Froud and Michael Hickey.

Sunday social runs of varying distances are usually arranged via social media.
Find us on facebook, the page is Basingstoke Runners.
For members, there are several whatsapp groups for both social runs and training.

The Club organises a Handicap series which historically was on the first Thursday of each month around a marked route of approx 4.8 miles.
The timing of these events are now more ad hoc, including some Sunday mornings. This event creates a great sense of friendly rivalry within the Club; it is also very useful for monitoring how the summer training is progressing.

Twice yearly we compete in a Mob Match against our friends from Overton. One at ‘home’ and one ‘away’.
Races are usually between June & August.

The Club actively encourages participation in various road races throughout the year for the Club Championships, culminating in October for the Basingstoke Half Marathon.

We also take part in the many road & trail relay events which form part of the road racing calendar.
These include the SEAA road relays, the South Downs Relay and the Emsworth Relay.

A large number of Road Runners also compete further afield, with many global marathons among the races our members are proud to show off their medals from! The London Marathon is an obvious target for many members and our training groups organise informal training runs throughout the Winter with a view to preparing for this (and other) Spring marathons.
The club has run a 12 or 18 week training schedule ahead of major marathons. Specific marathon training takes place alongside the regular training session on Tuesdays at 6.30pm.
